Summary: The Department of Biology invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in microbiology to join the faculty beginning August 16, 2016. While all areas of specialization in microbiology will be considered, the ideal candidate will have a primary research focus in one or more of the following areas of biomedical microbiology: infectious disease, immunology, virology, host-microbe interactions, or microbial physiology.
Duties and Responsibilities: The candidate will be expected to develop a nationally competitive, extramurally funded research program that involves Ph.D., M.S., and undergraduate students. Teaching expectations include an undergraduate/graduate lecture and laboratory course in microbiology. The faculty hire will be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and serve as an academic advisor to biology and pre-medicine majors. In addition, the faculty hire will be expected to participate in the departments outside speaker program, a graduate special topics journal club course, and to supervise an occasional undergraduate seminar course.
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in microbiology or a related discipline
Relevant post-doctoral experience
Demonstrated record of excellence in microbiological research
Articulated commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent record of peer-reviewed publication in scientific journals
Demonstration of a research program including microbiological aims
Commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research
Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive, collegial, work atmosphere
Commitment to advising and teaching students from diverse backgrounds
