隨著留學熱潮的到來，也有越來越多的藝術類學生涌向海外。我們知道，歐洲及美國等發達國家的專業教育已經經歷了上百年的歷史，無論是美國服裝設計、營銷還是視覺藝術等方面，都經歷了多年的市場考驗，并且針對企業的實際需求延伸出了許多應用性很強的邊緣學科，比如商品企劃，采購學等，這些專業教育也的確為企業提供了更多可應用型的專業人才。但在國內，在這方面國內卻相對比較薄弱。
美國服裝設計學系以培養學生人文素質與表達服裝設計創作之專業技術與能力為教育目標，透過作品競賽、展演等創作驗證中發展個人特質與設計創作 力，同時為因應服飾產業人才需求以及擴展學生就業空間，分別規劃設計、經營企劃、生產管理、織品設計等專業輔助選修課程，為服飾產業培育全方位之專業人才。
在申請服裝設計方面，服裝專業除了托福成績之外(僅小部分學校接受雅思成績)，本科生需要參加SAT考試，Mater Degree的話，如果是偏設計方面的專業，一般不需要GRE成績，但也有少部分學校有要求。
